  1. The World Health Organization (WHO)

    The WHO makes recommendations about breastfeeding based on science from the world community. They partner with UNICEF to recommend newborns are breastfed within the first hour of birth, often referred to as the “golden hour”. Infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life and then complement foods are introduced while breastfeeding continues until 2 years or longer if desired.

  2. La Leche League

    Incredible international resource that provides easily accessible information online and provides lactation support in the form of “leaders” who are parent volunteers that undergo training to support breastfeeding. You can reach out for online support, find a support group, or message a leader.

  3. Women, Infants, and Children

    Tons of free resources here that cover common breastfeeding issues, returning to work, pumping, etc. Based on income you may qualify for a free breast pump or visits with a lactation counselor or consultant.

  4. Kellymom.com

    A personal favorite, an online resource created by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Easy access to your burning questions, supported by the literature.

  5. Your Birth Provider and Pediatrician

    Make sure you have thoroughly vetted these providers and you trust their judgement. They will be guiding you through pregnancy, birth, and parenthood. Not all providers are the same, many draw from varying levels of expertise and personal experience. Interview several if you haven’t selected a team yet. Don’t be afraid to look for other providers if you are not feeling heard. Having a trusting relationship is essential for you and your baby’s success.

  6. Your Local Hospital or Birth Center

    Tap into your local resources, do they provide breastfeeding classes? Do they have lactation support and what does that look like? Is there a CLC or IBCLC on staff?

  7. Your Local Support Groups

    Ask your birth providers what kind of support groups there are in the area, La Leche League is another great way to connect with other breastfeeding families.

  8. The Lactation Network

    A fantastic resource to connect you with an IBCLC in your area or virtually. They match your insurance with the provider and can often offer you several potential providers to ensure its a perfect match.

  9. LactMed

    Very helpful resource to look up any and all medications you may take or be prescribed during your breastfeeding journey. Has all available research related to specific medications to help make decisions around the safety of medications in breastfeeding. As always, consult with your provider before taking any medications during pregnancy and/or breastfeeding.
